You're looking for salvation
You thought that it'd be shining
Like an angel's light
Well, the angels left this nation
And salvation caught the last train
Out tonight
He lost one hell of a fight
~~~~~~~~
My head hurts. So does my side. I crack one eye open to take in my surroundings, a little confused as to why there’s a rather pleasant older man watching me, “Ah Justin, you’re awake”, he says, making no move to help me up as I swing my legs over the side of the, surprisingly comfortable, bed. I wince as I shift, looking about, “Where’s Brian?” I ask, watching the Doctor furrow his brow and look sad, “He told me to tell you he’s….sorry…” I open my mouth to speak when my name is yelled from outside. Jumping up, yelping as I pull at my side, I slowly walk out the door, using Vic as a prop, his arm round my waist.
There’s James, standing where the horses were, only ours remain, “They’ve gone! They’ve left us behind!” he yells, clearly in a panic. My eyes are sad as I stare at the exit to the town, wondering why they’d do that. Brian sure I could understand, but wouldn’t Dad have something to say about it?
I drop my gaze, holding back a sob as I push away from Vic and limp up the street, past a few onlookers before I come to a stop. Why were we abandoned? Was it because we were kids? Cause I got hurt? Were we slowing them down? So many questions and the only ones who could answer it were gone.
“Justin?”
I know that voice. My heart stops as I turn about, “Mom?” She looks as beautiful as always, her blonde hair pinned on top of her head, a red velvet dress hugging her body. I’d think she was almost happy to see me.
If she wasn’t glaring.
“What are you doing back here? Just wait till your father finds out, he’ll beat some sense into you. It’s called exile for a reason!” she hissed, slapping me hard. I dropped my gaze as she scowled, “I got hurt, I needed a Doctor…” I whisper, more to myself but she hears me and her face softens, “Hurt? Where?” I point at my side.
That was my mistake as she hits it, causing me to double over in pain and for James to come running, “Justin!” I feel hands on me as he helps me up, “You crazy bitch! What are you playing at!?” he all but screams at her but I shake my head, “C’mon James, we’re going after them”, I mumble, glaring once more at my mother before walking back to Webb who is watching with curious eyes I pat her nose before vaulting on, slowly, shifting to get comfy before riding out, leaving ‘home’ behind.
It’s night before we stop again for rest, our horses dead on their feet. I roll off my mare, landing on a heap on the ground and laughing, crawling against a tree as James follows. I stop abruptly as I hear voices nearby, drawing my pistol as I edge towards it, James in tow. There’s three men, sat around a fire. Two look barely older then James while one is evidentially older than them both. They don’t look like the authorities so I approach.
“Umm hello?”
Pistols are aimed as I raise an eyebrow, holstering mine, “Put them down, I’m not here to take you in or whatever. I just want to know, have you passed a group. Lead by Brian Kinney?” The older man’s eyes light up, “You know Brian sweetie!?” he all but squeals causing me to recoil slightly, “Umm yeah, my brother and I travelled with him”. He nods and pats the ground beside him, “Well baby, I’m Emmett, that grumpy one over there is Ethan and the one who tried to use you for target practise is Cody, we’re looking for Brian too, you could travel with us!” he squeals happily, clapping his hands as we sit down.
I have a feeling this is going to be a long journey.
Gonna take a miracle to save you this time
And your saviour has just left town
Gonna need a miracle
'Cause your heart's doing time
And your conscience is calling you out
It ain't all for nothing
Life ain't written in the sand
I know the tide is coming
But it's time we made a stand
With a miracle
